Towards Net Zero Carbon Campuses for Climate Change Mitigation and Resilience

Public Engagement

In an effort to foster awareness and drive meaningful discourse on the critical topic of achieving net zero carbon campuses, a public engagement event was organized in the IHUb, at Ainshams university. This event featured distinguished keynote speakers from both industry and academia, renowned for their expertise and pioneering contributions in the realm of sustainable practices. By bringing them together, we created insightful discussions and knowledge exchange, delving into innovative strategies, emerging technologies, and actionable insights that can pave the way towards carbon neutrality within campus environments. The event also witnessed honoring the winning teams of the international competition to design a zero-carbon campus.

The talks inspired collaboration between sectors, empowered stakeholders with valuable information, and catalyzed momentum towards creating environmentally conscious and resilient educational campuses. For example, Eng. Fouad Zayed, Vice President of Schneider Electric for the Digital Energy Sector, discussed the concept of Electricity 4.0 and the necessity of integrating energy management and digital transformation to reach a zero-emissions future. Prof. Ahmed Atef Faggal Professor of Environmental Design – Department of Architecture – Ain Shams University discussed the topic Towards Zero Energy Campus - The Architect Role. Dr. Amr el Banhawy, Associate Professor, Mechanical Power Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Ain Shams university presented the smart and resilient building’s theme at the energy technology and climate change laboratory. Dr. Ahmed El Awady Assistant Professor in System Design Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences, Ain Shams University and the Executive Director, Center of Excellence for Sustainability (CoES) - Ain Shams University discussed the efforts and achievements of Ain shams university towards net zero carbon campus. Eng. Islam Ghubashy Business Development Manager - Huawei Digital Power Egypt discussed the topic towards net zero carbon information and communication Technologies.

The event was Under the auspices of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research within the efforts and vision of Ain Shams University towards green transformation, under the auspices of Prof. Mahmoud El-Meteini, President of Ain Shams University, and each of the prof. Abdel Fattah Saoud, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs, and Prof. Ayman Saleh, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research, Prof. Ghada Farouk, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, Prof. Omar Al-Husseini, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, at Ain Shams University. Workshop

A workshop were organized on the 23rd of March 2023 Under the title of “Net zero Carbon Campuses”. Round discussions were conducted in three rounds. Each round lasts for 20 minutes. The workshop participants were divided into seven groups each assigned with a moderator. Each moderator started with welcoming the group and gave them a brief introduction of the sheet design raising main questions that steered up the discussion. In the first round They started with brainstorming to reach ideas and suggestions for NZCC. Then, in the second round, ideas were assessed regarding 4 questions:

  • Feasibility: Can the idea be realistically implemented given available resources, time, and technology?
  • Desirability: Does the idea align with the values, goals, and needs of the target audience?
  • Viability: Is the idea financially and economically sustainable?
  • Scalability: Can the idea be expanded or replicated easily to reach a larger population or area?

In the third round, an action plan was suggested for the proposed ideas. In the closing, all moderators gave a brief conclusion about the ideas and action plan they suggested.
